This dude spent years in San Quentin Prison for armed robbery and became a national prison boxing champion (yeah, PRISON fucking boxing) before becoming a fight scene coach and Hollywood star. He played Razor Charlie in "Dusk til' Dawn" and will be in the movie theaters soon with "Machete" (see above trailer). Trejo exemplifies everything Tuff Rock is about, as we are pretty sure he's not a fan of Belle & Sebastian or fixed gear bicycles.

Blues Creation - Demon and Eleven Children

Blues Creation was formed by guitarists Kazuo Takeda, Koh Eiryu and singer Fumio Nunoya, in early 1969, after the dissolution of their Group Sounds outfit The Bickies. Highly influenced by Cream and The Yardbirds, Takeda joined forces with school friends Takayuki Noji, Shinichi Tashiro, and lead singer Fumio Nunoya. Formerly vocalist with Taboo, a heavy band led by future Happy End guitarist Eiichi Otaki, Nunoya was also searching for an even heavier sound, and the results of the new American-influenced experiment were released in October 1969, as BLUES CREATION, on the Polydor label. Nowadays, the results sound fairly tame and typical of the time, and though their versions of ‘Smokestack Lightning’ and ‘Spoonful’ feature some nice slurred vocals from Nunoya, it’s difficult to find any 1969 Japanese band that did not attempt the latter song at one time or another. Singer Fumio Nunoya soon found himself edged out of artistic decisions by the supremely confident Takeda, and thereafter left to form his own bandDew. Whilst searching around throughout 1970 for a new singer, guitarist Takeda heard the new even more strung out music of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Eric Clapton’s solo LP CLAPTON, and Leslie West’s Mountain, and decided he should take the opportunity to start again from scratch. Takeda enlisted bassist Masashi Saeki and drummer Akiyoshi Higuchi for the new line-up, and eschewed the previous covers style in favour of his own compositions. With the new Blues Creation fronted by singer Hiromi Osawa, Kazuo Takeda recorded what has come to be regarded as his masterpiece in the form of DEMON & ELEVEN CHILDREN. Despite its obvious influences, this eight song barrage of sound was both complex and supremely individual, and showed clear influences from his fellow countrymen and free-thinkers the newly-formed Flower Travellin’ Band. Opening with the super stoner anthem ‘Atomic Bombs Away’, the LP included such other delightful song titles as ‘Brain Baster’, and featured a classic original ‘Mississippi Mountain Blues’, which mirrored the heaviness located within the grooves of Flower Travellin’ Band’s juggernaut ‘Louisiana Blues’. Later on in 1971, CARMEN MAKI & BLUES CREATION was released by Polydor, which utilised the massive (and unexpected) success of Blues Creation as a vehicle for the promotion of the beautiful young female blues singer Carmen Maki. The LP featured songs mostly by Takeda, plus covers of such standards as ‘St. James’ Infirmary’, and had been recorded during the sessions for DEMON & ELEVEN CHILDREN. This LP was also well received, but Maki’s cardboard and shrill pedestrian presence so detracted from the overall heaviness of the sound that each song became a plod-o-thon of brain crushing dimensions. Maki’s so-called Janis Joplinisms are even less believable than the reedy squeelings of her US contemporary Zephyr’s Candy Givens (if that’s possible), and nowadays sound wretchedly inappropriate and forced. Furthermore, elsewhere Carmen Maki sounds almost autistically restrained and Sade-like (yup, I’m not shitting you) compared to the brilliantly orgasmic and heart-stopping interpretations of Janis’ (and Jimi’s) work that Flowers’ singer Lemi Aso had achieved eighteen months before, on The Flowers’ excellent LP CHALLENGE! The end of 1971 saw the release of BLUES CREATION LIVE, the sleeve of which featured just the long-haired Takeda in a wide-brimmed floppy hat, re-inforcing the idea that this was really just a vehicle for the guitarist’s talents. This album was recorded at the Japan Folk Jamboree, and is a full-on gem of a record, but Takeda was now widely known as a true Japanese guitar hero, and – as ever – had set his sights higher and higher. He split Blues Creation the following year, before splitting for London in late 1972. Outside of his Japanese environment, Takeda played many guitar sessions and slowly began to gain confidence in himself as a lead vocalist, so much so that when he returned to the Japanese music scene, in 1973, to support Mountain, it was as the lead singer/guitarist of a new power trio called simply Creation. The urbane and gregarious Takeda hit it off with Leslie West and Mountain drummer Corky Laing, but became even bigger mates with bassist Felix Pappalardi and his wife Gail Collins, who had written most of the lyrics for Mountain’s hits. However, Creation did not release their first LP until 1975, by which time Takeda – nervous of his new role as lead singer – invited rhythm guitarist Yoshiaki Iijima to join drummer Masayuki Higuchi and bassist Shigeru Matsumoto in the new line up. Unfortunately, like Jimmy Page, Tony Iommi and Jimi Hendrix, Kazuo Takeda is the last person to require a rhythm guitar player to flesh out his sound, and so the recorded results of this debut were overall pretty bland and homogenised, despite the LP having been produced by legendary Flower Travellin’ Band producer Yuya Utchida, and featuring a classic sleeve that featured eleven young boys having a pissing contest! Takeda was unhappy with the production and was determined that the next LP should be recorded in the USA. Takeda contacted Felix Pappalardi and asked him to produce the second Creation LP. Pappalardi, temporarily deafened by the high volume at which Mountain always played concerts, had already decided to concentrate on studio production, and so he and his wife began to write songs with Takeda at their Nantucket home in Massachussets. In April 1976, the results were released in Japan as CREATION WITH FELIX PAPPALARDI and in the US as FELIX PAPPALARDI CREATION. Unfortunately, the international acclaim that Kazuo Takeda so longed for was still unforthcoming, although the record was once more a mighty success in Japan. The final Creation album PURE ELECTRIC SOUL was a live recording released in 1977, and its sleeve mirrored the band’s debut, again featuring a crowd of pre-teen boys crowding against the front windows of a bus.

he entire Swiss hard rock movement in the '70s. Their first single, "Stay." made a great deal of headway on the Swiss charts -- a feat that no other hard rock band had ever accomplished in that country. Essentially a power trio consisting of Vittorio "Vic" Vergeat (guitar/vocals), Werner Frohlich (bass) and Cosimo Lampis (drums), Toad enlisted the help of vocalist Bens Jaeger for this (and only this) album. Heavily blues-based rock (à la Cream/Black Sabbath) was the maj

or force behind Toad's hard driving sound, with bassist Frohlich providing a mean (and meanderingly gutsy) counterpoint to Vergeat's loose and greasy guitar licks. The record also has moments of Deep Purple-like propulsion, no doubt thanks to that band's engineer Martin Birch, who manned the controls on this one as well. Like most of the B-list (sometimes C-list) rock groups that Italian imprint Akarma has reissued throughout the early 2000s, Toad's debut was mainly a collector's object in its LP form. There were better bands out there, doing the same sort of thing, but, chances are, those records were already on the shelves of most die-hard collectors. Albums like Toad may have enjoyed regional success in their time, but were largely forgotten or relegated to "closet classic" status (if they were remembered at all). These types of records have been fetching higher and higher prices over the years and it's darn good to see a r

eissue label dipping into this pool of underappreciated groups. In fact, if you have an appetite for this sort of thing, Akarma's reissue lineup really can't be beat -- plus, they'll save you from getting all that funky record-sleeve-mold on your fingers while you spend months searching for the (rare, rare, rare) original vinyl editions.

Weed - Weed 1971

Ken Hensley of Uriah Heep fame had a leading role In Weed.

He recorded the Weed album during March 1971 in between the Uriah Heep albums Salisbury and Look At Yourself. Some members of the 1970/71 Virus line-up were also involved, Bernd Hohmann and Werner Monka at least and possibly their rhythm section as well.

All six tracks were composed by the concert promoter Bobo Albes and Phillips' household producer Rainer Goltermann made sure the sessions in the Windrose Studios in Hamburg were preserved for posterity.

The album comprised straight-forward heavy progressive blues-rock with twin guitars and organ to the fore, culminating in the excellent, long instrumental title track. Weed can be compared to other German heavy progsters of the era, such as Zarathustra, Blackwater Park, Epitaph and Armaggedon, as well as Ken Hensley's similarly obscure (Head Machine) album Orgasm dating from 1969 or 1970.

The sleeve of the Weed album is quite noteworthy - a somewhat disgusting, middle-aged house wife is pictured, offering some 'weed' of an unknown nature!

A fine album, but very rare and accordingly high priced at the collector's market.

All of us at TuffRock have been big fans of HAMC's Club President Sonny Barger's writings as well as some of the classic biker flicks featuring Barger, MaGoo and Terry the Tramp. Movies like "Hell's Angels '69" seriously kick ass and the customized classic Harleys (sissy bars, ape hangers, coffin tanks, you name it) in the flick make you wanna sell your pussy ass Huyundai and grow some nuts. Here are some tough as nails shots from the Oakland Clubhouse and HAMC on the road back in the day. Check out some of Barger's books if you want a good read. Sonny also writes some pretty awesome fiction, check out "Dead in 5 Heartbeats" or "6 Chambers, 1 Bullet".

Ralph Hubert "Sonny" Barger (born October 8, 1938 in Modesto, California) is a founding member (1957) of the Oakland, California, U.S. chapter of Hells Angels.
Sonny Barger is also the author of four books: Hell's Angel: The Life and Times of Sonny Barger and the Hell's Angels Motorcycle Club, Freedom: Credos from the Road, Dead in 5 Heartbeats and 6 Chambers, 1 Bullet. He was editor for the book Ridin' High, Livin' Free. Barger has appeared as an extra in the films Hells Angels on Wheels and Hell's Angels '69.
In 1983, Barger was diagnosed with throat cancer, caused by years of heavy smoking. As a result, his vocal cords were removed, and after a laryngectomy he has learned to vocalize using the muscles in his throat.
As of 2007, Barger remains an active member of the Hells Angels in the Cave Creek Chapter (Phoenix, Arizona), having moved there from Oakland in 1998. He is reported to have owned 10 to 12 motorcycles throughout his life. [1]
Barger was one of the Hells Angels present at the The Rolling Stones' Altamont Free Concert in 1969. He is also infamous for his appearance in Hunter S. Thompson's bestselling book, Hell's Angels: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs.
Barger and the Hells Angels made international headlines when a small group disrupted hundreds of anti-war protestors in Berkeley, California in 1965.
In 1988, Barger was sentenced for conspiring to blow up the clubhouse of a rival motorcycle club, the Outlaws in Louisville, Kentucky, and spent four years in federal prison in Arizona.

You can't get more "cult metal" than Pentagram (after all, the group didn't manage to issue a proper studio album during their early-'70s peak), but somehow, Bedemon manages to accomplish this feat. During the early '70s, Pentagram bandmembers Bobby Liebling (vocals) and Geof O'Keefe (drums) were asked by the group's brief second guitarist/horror movie buff, Randy Palmer, if they'd be interested in working on some material that Palmer had penned. The pair agreed, and recorded a few tracks with bassist Mike Matthews circa 1973 and 1974. The tracks were not recorded in a proper studio setting, but rather live at Pentagram's rehearsal space, with Liebling overdubbing vocals and Palmer overdubbing solos. After only three tracks were completed, "Child of Darkness," "Serpent Venom," and "Frozen Fear," Palmer officially joined up with Pentagram (helping co-write one of Pentagram's best songs, "Starlady")

Frijid Pink spent their first two years touring relentlessly throughout the Southeast Michigan area. The group, with Tom Beaudry replaced Harris on bass, eventually signed with Parrot Records in 1969; although their first two singles, Tell Me Why and Drivin' Blues, failed to attract much attention, their third effort for the company, a distorted guitar-laden rendition of House Of The Rising Sun reached the Top Ten on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and sold over a million copies. Ironically, the song was literally "filler", helping to round out the final time slot at the end of a recording session. A big hit in the States (raised at #7 in February 1970), it became an even bigger hit overseas. Although the song was in the public domain, the band never received a penny for the huge hit due to shady lawyers for the record company

Iron Claw

Hailing from the town of Dumfries in South West Scotland, the origins of the band Iron Claw started in the summer of 1969. Founding member Alex Wilson, who was then aged 21, and was at the time assisting in the management of another local band, as well as recording music as a hobby.
Alex knew the best young guitarist and drummer in the area who were still uninvolved with any other bands, and on August 13th 1969, Jimmy Ronnie (15) (guitar) joined, followed by Ian McDougall (15) (drums) on August 23rd 1969. Finding a vocalist proved more difficult, and Alex had to handle vocals as well as bass during the early rehearsals and for the first three public appearances! Playing cover versions at first to "tighten up", songs by the likes of Johnny Winter, Free, Taste, 10 Years After, Blind Faith, Keef Hartley Band, and Black Cat Bones gave an indication of the type of blues based material that the band were developing. Finding a name at this point was also a problem, and their first public appearance on October 3rd 1969 was under the name "NAJ", which continued until mid November. Then another "revelation" occurred on November 16th 1969. While Alex was recording a local band at Dumfries Youth Club, Black Sabbath played a set and amazed everybody who was lucky enough to be there that night. As well as pointing the way to a heavier type of music, in the audience that night was a local musician who agreed to join as vocalist for the impending Claw, Mike Waller (17).

Iron Claw shared the stage with some legends over the 54 months they were in existence, bands like the Kinks, Spencer Davis Group, Troggs, Pink Fairies, Mick Abrahams Band, Juicy Lucy, Barclay James Harvest and East of Eden spring to mind.

Primevil was from near Indianapolis, IN.
Their only release was recorded and produced in 1974
at Moe Whittemore’s 700 West studio in Indiana.
Smokin’ Bats at Campton’s
is one of the Tuffest heavy rock monsters of the Midwest.
With a heaviness that sounds like Black Sabbath lead by two virtuoso guitarists Jay Wilfong and Larry Lucas. Their chemistry can be heard on “Hey, Lover” allegedly composed and recorded in one night in Whittemore’s New Palestine studio. Legend has it there used to be hundred count boxes of this record floating around. At least one thrift store was reputed to have had multiple copies of the lp at one time. Today, it is relatively rare and commands about $100 value of among both psych and heavy rock collectors.”

Tarkus, the Tuffest of all bands from Peru, was formed in 1971. The members were Peruvians Alex Nathanson and Walo Carillo (the great drummer from Los Holy's) and Argentinians Dario Gianella and Guillermo Van Locke. It was Guillermo Van Locke, the group's bass player, who approached two members of Telegraph Avenue: Alex Nathanson, singer and acoustic guitar, and Walo Carrillo, drums and percussion. Tarkus was recorded from April 3rd to May 16th, 1972.

Speechless. Tuff Rock has found another fossilized massive riff monster deep in the smoldering pits of hell, and this my friends is one of those "holy grail" records on par with Pentagram's "Last Daze Here" and Blue Cheer's "Vincebus Eruptum". British Progressive Blues with a heavy hand and earbleeding fuzz. It is certainly not a stretch to say this may be one of the heaviest records to come out of the early 70's, possibly too heavy at the time which would explain the bands obscurity. Trust me this download is worth it. With song titles like "When the Wolf Sits" and "Hooded Eagle" do I have to say any more?

Under the direction of guitarist Joe Walsh, the group -- now featuring bassist Dale Peters -- began incorporating keyboards into their hard rock, which helped open up their musical horizons. For much of the first side of Rides Again, the group tears through a bunch of boogie numbers, most notably the heavy groove of "Funk #49." On the second side, the James Gang departs from their trademark sound, adding keyboard flourishes and elements of country-rock to their hard rock. Walsh's songwriting had improved, giving the band solid support for their stylistic experiments.

Power of Zeus was formed in 1968 by Detroit vocalist / guitarist Joe Periano shortly after his release from the Marine Corps. Joe was joined by bassist/vocalist Bill Jones, drummer Bob Michalski & Hammond organist Dennie Webber. Initially going by the name of Gangrene, the Cream/Zeppelin/Sabbath inspired heavy rock quartet became the unofficial house band at the Wooden Nickel club, where they were eventually spotted by a local manager. Motown psyche-oriented subsidiary Rare Earth signed the band on the condition they find a new name. Having decided upon Power of Zeus they began work on what would become their sole release, 1970's The Gospel According to Zeus LP. The relationship between band and label was strained, with the former claiming that the latter had no experience of recording a heavy rock act, and that the Motown producers had failed to nail their crunchier live sound on tape. Certainly the LP is pretty far removed from the sound of fellow Detroit rockers The MC5 and The Stooges, but what it lacks in grime it makes up for in Super Heavy Funkiness - Hammond, bass & drums are to the fore, with production as fat & full as you would expect from the Motown studios. The LP was pretty much a flop at the time, but has since become a highly sought after item, attaining genuine legendary status amongst record collectors

Very rare post "Atomic Rooster" and pre "Hard Stuff" unreleased Demo LP-1970-1971 from the Masters. Heavy progressive with lengthy jams featuring John du Cann. Post Atomic Rooster, pre Hard Stuff. Daemon crawled from the burning pits in 1970, dragging blackenedguitars across smouldering rock, smiling eerily as they ascended. On the seventh circle, in a flash of white, Daemon emerged. Guitars wailed. Angels wept. After much studio work Daemon attempting social acceptance, adopted the name "Bullet", later "Hard Stuff", releasing some singles & two LP's, the tracks on this releases were the first recorded by Daemon 1970/1971, all have been digitally remastered by John du Cann from original 1/4 master tapes. Only the orchestrator uses an acetate as a source. Daemon vanished mid-song on stage in 1972. A sulfurous residue settled upon the bats of a gaping audience. Fire fell from the sky....

Discovered by former Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich frontman Dave Dee, the Kids were signed by Atlantic Records and went immediately into the studio to record their debut album, Heavy Metal Kids. It was well received, but did little, a fate which many observers put down to the conflicting signals sent out by the band's name.

Blue Cheer was a San Francisco-based rock group of the late 1960s and early 1970s, who helped to pioneer heavy metal music. Original personnel were singer/bassist Dickie Peterson, guitarist Leigh Stephens, and drummer Paul Whaley. A prototypical power trio, the band was named after a variety of LSD promoted by underground chemist and Grateful Dead backer Owsley Stanley. This variety of LSD took its name from a popular laundry detergent. Their first hit was a cover version of Eddie Cochran’s “Summertime Blues” from their debut album Vincebus Eruptum (1968).

The roots of that strange, outlaw motorcycle band, Blue Öyster Cult, can be traced back to the smoky wisps of psychedelia, when they were known as Soft White Underbelly, Oaxaca, and eventually The Stalk Forest Group.

Blue Öyster Cult began to earn a reputation as a fiercely exciting rock band, propelled by Roeser's raw chord dynamics, Pearlman's sinister lyrics, and an apocalyptic stage presence based on Hell's Angels imagery and the black and white symbol of Kronos (Saturn), later their trademark. Pearlman molded the sound and image of the band to evoke the spirit of Altamont. However, while The Rolling Stones dabbled with jet-set debauchery and satanic posturing, Blue Öyster Cult seemed like the real thing: grizzly hedonists pursuing dark thrills and meddling in the black arts with psychotic glee.

This legendary progressive rock band, which was responsible for the UK's most expensive album, was formed by Steve Giles whilst at school in Northampton in 1968. They met local entrepreneur Alan Bowley who'd recently converted a derelict house into a recording studio, and this led to four acetates of "RC8" and "In The Sky".

They performed at a few local gigs, and as their playing got tighter, decided to go into SIS Studios, Northampton, with engineer Alan Bowley, to record an album. The six tracks, written and arranged by the band were recorded over a weekend in 1972 and consist of melodic progressive rock laced with lots of fuzzy guitar riffs. Only a handful of copies were pressed, and Giles, who had a strong interest in photography, made the first twelve copies into full-colour gatefold sleeves, complete with booklets of photographs stapled together, augmented with handwritten notes. They were handed out to band members and their girlfriends! These are now valued at 3000$ by Record Collectors

Basically, San Francisco’s Shiver were a bunch of hard-rocking hippie freaks, brought together by a Texas-bred drummer who moved to San Francisco to take up where his obvious heroes Blue Cheer left off. They soon had a rather Rough, Tuff reputation, playing Haight street fairs and Hells Angels biker parties. At one point they even had a singer with an iron hook for a hand, which he could use as a slide for his guitar, or for more violent purposes. Shiver played “heavy psychedelic rock” at its most primal — no overdubs, raw as hell.

Rising from the same scene of Texas freaks like The 13th Floor Elevators, Johnny Gee & The G Men, and a pre-ZZ Top, Warlocks. In a city known for peace, love and flower power, San Francisco’s Shiver was an over the top, in your face, balls to the wall ‘gang’ of musicians that felt at home with Hell´s Angels and Hippies alike.
